    10 Best Ways to Improve WiFi Signal at Home

A router tucked into a cupboard beside the NBN box may keep the room looking tidy, but it can leave the back bedroom, shed or home office with unreliable internet. The best ways to improve Wi-Fi signal usually start with a few simple changes to where your equipment sits and how your home network is set up – not immediately buying the most expensive new router.

Wi-Fi problems are frustrating because they often look the same. Pages take ages to load, video calls freeze, streaming buffers, or a laptop drops out altogether. Yet the cause could be poor coverage, interference, an overloaded router, an internet service issue, or the device itself. Working through the right checks can save time and money.

Start by working out whether it is Wi-Fi or the internet

Before changing settings, test whether the issue affects every device or only one. If all devices are slow, including those near the router, the issue may be with the NBN connection, modem, router or internet provider. If a computer works well in the lounge but struggles in a distant room, that points more strongly to Wi-Fi coverage.

If possible, connect a Windows desktop or laptop directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and run a speed test. A wired connection is not affected by wireless signal strength. If wired speeds are also poor, moving the router will not fix the underlying internet problem. Check for an outage, restart the NBN equipment and router once, and contact your provider if the fault continues.

Avoid rebooting equipment repeatedly throughout the day. A single restart can clear a temporary glitch, but regular dropouts need a proper diagnosis.

Put the router where the signal can actually travel

Router position is one of the best ways to improve Wi-Fi signal, and it costs nothing. Wi-Fi travels through open space much better than it travels through brick walls, concrete floors, metal, mirrors and large appliances. A router hidden in a cabinet, placed on the floor or surrounded by cables and electronics is starting at a disadvantage.

Aim for a central, open position as high as practical, such as on a shelf or desk. Keep it away from thick masonry walls, fish tanks, metal filing cabinets, cordless-phone bases and microwave ovens. In many Adelaide homes, the NBN connection enters at one end of the house, which is not always the best location for wireless coverage. In that case, a longer Ethernet cable may allow the router to be moved to a more useful spot.

If your router has external aerials, position them sensibly. One vertical and one horizontal can help devices held or placed in different orientations. Do not expect dramatic results from tiny aerial adjustments, but they can make a modest difference at the edges of coverage.

Use the right Wi-Fi band for the room and device

Most current routers offer 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The 2.4 GHz band reaches further and handles walls a little better, but it is generally slower and more crowded. The 5 GHz band is usually faster and less affected by neighbouring networks, although its range is shorter.

For a device in the same room or nearby, 5 GHz is normally the better choice for video calls, streaming and work. For a printer, smart device or computer at the far end of the home, 2.4 GHz may be more dependable. Some routers choose the band automatically under one network name, which can work well. Others let you give each band a separate name, making it easier to test which one is better in a problem area.

Newer routers may also offer 6 GHz. It can deliver excellent performance over short distances on compatible devices, but it is not a cure for poor coverage through several walls.

Reduce interference and crowded channels

In built-up streets and unit complexes, your router may be competing with many nearby networks. This is especially common on 2.4 GHz. The result can be a connection that appears strong but performs poorly at busy times.

Many routers can select a channel automatically, and that is often enough. If performance remains inconsistent, checking the router’s Wi-Fi settings or using a network scanning tool on a Windows computer can reveal whether a channel is heavily congested. On 2.4 GHz, channels 1, 6 and 11 are usually the practical choices because they do not overlap with one another.

It also helps to move the router away from wireless speakers, Bluetooth hubs and other radio equipment where possible. A microwave oven can briefly interfere with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi while it is running. That does not mean the microwave is faulty, but it is a useful clue if the dropouts happen around meal times.

Update the router and your computer

Old firmware can cause stability, security and compatibility problems. Log in to your router occasionally and check for firmware updates from its manufacturer or internet provider. The update process varies, so do not switch off the router while it is being installed.

On Windows computers, install available system updates and update the wireless network driver if you are having repeated connection issues on that particular machine. A laptop with an ageing Wi-Fi adapter may not support newer standards as well as a current model. In some cases, the home network is fine and one older device is simply the weak point.

Also check the basics: make sure the router is not overheating, its power supply is secure, and its cables are not damaged or loose. Equipment that has been running continuously for years can become unreliable.

Extend coverage properly in large or awkward homes

A single router cannot always cover a long house, two-storey layout, thick-walled character home, granny flat or detached office. If the router is already in the best available spot, extra equipment may be the right answer.

A basic Wi-Fi extender can help in a small dead spot, but it has limits. It must be placed where it still receives a good signal from the main router, not in the area with no signal at all. Because many extenders receive and retransmit traffic wirelessly, speeds can drop. They are a reasonable low-cost option for light browsing, but may disappoint for demanding work or streaming.

A mesh Wi-Fi system is often a better choice for whole-home coverage. It uses several coordinated units to spread the connection around the home. Mesh systems are convenient, though their performance still depends on where each unit is placed and how well the units communicate with one another.

For the most reliable result, use an Ethernet cable to connect an additional wireless access point or mesh unit back to the main router. This is called a wired backhaul. It takes more planning, but it avoids relying on a weak wireless link to carry the signal further. For a small business, a separate office, or a home where video calls matter, wired access points are often worth considering.

Give high-priority devices a wired connection

Wi-Fi is convenient, but Ethernet is still the most dependable option for devices that stay in one place. A desktop computer, smart TV, work dock, network printer or gaming system can often be connected directly to the router or a nearby network switch.

This does two useful things: it gives that device a stable connection and reduces competition for wireless airtime. It is particularly helpful when several people are working, studying or streaming at once. If running a cable is difficult, a local technician can advise whether a cable route, access point or mesh setup is realistic for the property.

Check what is using your connection

Sometimes the signal is fine, but the connection is busy. Cloud backups, game downloads, system updates, security cameras and several high-definition streams can use a surprising amount of bandwidth. Look at the router’s connected-device list and see whether unfamiliar or unnecessary devices are online.

Change the Wi-Fi password if you do not recognise a device, and use WPA2 or WPA3 security where your equipment supports it. A strong, unique password protects more than your speed. It also helps protect personal files, online accounts and business information.

If a household has heavy internet use, your current NBN plan may simply not have enough speed for the number of people and devices. Better Wi-Fi cannot create bandwidth your service does not provide. A good test is to compare wired and wireless speeds at different times of day before deciding whether to upgrade the plan.

Know when the router is due for replacement

Routers do not last forever. A model supplied years ago may struggle with a busy household, modern laptops, smart devices and fast NBN plans. Regular dropouts, poor range, slow performance close to the router and missing security updates are all signs it may be time to replace it.

That said, buying a new router without checking the layout and connection type can be an expensive guess. The right equipment depends on the size and construction of the home, where the NBN service enters, how many devices connect, and whether you need coverage in an office, garage or outdoor entertaining area.
