    How to Secure Your Home WiFi Network Safely

A slow or unreliable internet connection is frustrating, but an unsecured WiFi network can cause bigger problems than buffering during a show. Neighbours may be using your connection without permission, unknown devices could be accessing shared files, or criminals may be trying to reach your computers through an old router setting. Learning how to secure home wifi network access is one of the simplest ways to protect the devices, accounts and personal information used in your household.

The good news is that most homes do not need expensive equipment or advanced technical knowledge. A few sensible settings in your modem or router can make a meaningful difference.

Start with the router admin password

Your WiFi password is not the only password that matters. Every modem and router also has an administrator login, which controls its settings. If this is still set to the factory default, someone who connects to your network may be able to change the WiFi password, disable security features or alter the internet settings.

Look for the router’s administration address on its label, in its paperwork or in the instructions supplied by your internet provider. Sign in and change the administrator password to a long, unique passphrase. Keep it somewhere safe, such as a reputable password manager or a written record stored securely at home.

Do not use the same password for the router admin page and your WiFi. They protect different things, so they should be different.

Use WPA3 or WPA2 security

Open the wireless security section of the router settings and check which security type is selected. WPA3 is the current preferred option. If your router or older devices do not support it, use WPA2-Personal, sometimes shown as WPA2-PSK with AES encryption.

Avoid WEP and old WPA modes. They were designed years ago and are much easier to defeat. If your router only offers these options, it is well past time to replace it.

There can be a trade-off with older printers, smart home equipment or laptops that refuse to connect after WPA3 is enabled. In that case, WPA2-Personal with AES remains a sensible and secure choice for most home networks. Avoid mixed WPA and WPA2 modes unless there is no alternative, as they can allow weaker connections.

Choose a strong WiFi password

A WiFi password should be long enough that it cannot be guessed easily. A short password made from a family name, street name, pet name or date of birth may feel personal, but it gives strangers a useful starting point.

Aim for a passphrase of at least 16 characters. Four unrelated words, with numbers or punctuation added if you like, can be easier to remember and much harder to crack than a short complicated-looking password. For example, do not copy this one, but a phrase such as “Window-Tulip-38-Coffee” is far safer than a common name followed by 123.

Change the password if you have shared it widely, have had visitors staying for an extended period, or spot a device you do not recognise. You do not need to change it every month if it is already long, unique and only known by people you trust.

Check who is connected to your network

Most routers show a list of connected devices. It may appear under names such as Connected Devices, Device List, Clients or Network Map. Review it occasionally, especially if your internet has become slow for no obvious reason.

You will often see devices with confusing names, so take your time. A television, printer, tablet, smart speaker, security camera or gaming console may not be immediately recognisable. Turning a device off briefly and refreshing the list can help identify it.

If there is an unknown device, change your WiFi password first. This forces all devices to reconnect with the new password. Then review your router settings for guest access and remote management, and make sure they are set appropriately.

Set up a guest WiFi network

A guest network is useful when friends, tradespeople or visitors need internet access. It gives them a separate WiFi name and password without handing over access to the main network used by your computers, printer and other household devices.

Turn on guest network isolation if your router offers it. This stops guest devices from communicating with devices on your main home network. It is also worth using a different guest password and changing it whenever needed.

For small businesses operating from home, this separation is particularly worthwhile. Customer or visitor devices should not sit on the same network as work computers, shared folders or business printers.

Keep your router firmware up to date

Router firmware is the software running inside the device. Updates can fix security weaknesses, improve stability and address connection problems. Some newer routers update automatically, while others need you to check manually through their administration page.

Before updating, make sure you have a stable power supply and do not switch the router off during the process. If the router was supplied by your internet provider, updates may be handled automatically. For a router you purchased separately, check the manufacturer and model details before applying any update.

If the router is no longer receiving security updates, replacement is usually the safer option. This is especially true for equipment that is many years old, repeatedly drops out or cannot use WPA2 or WPA3 security.

Turn off risky features you do not use

Many routers include features intended to make setup easier, but convenience can sometimes reduce security. WPS, for example, lets devices join WiFi using a button or PIN. The button method is less concerning, but disabling WPS altogether is a sensible choice if you do not need it.

Also check that remote administration is turned off. This feature can allow router settings to be accessed from outside your home network. It is rarely necessary for ordinary home use and is best left disabled unless you understand exactly why it is needed.

UPnP is another setting worth considering. It can help some games, consoles and video calls work with less setup, but it allows devices to request changes to network ports automatically. If everything works without it, turning it off reduces exposure. If you rely on it, keep your devices updated and review your network regularly instead of disabling features blindly.

Protect the devices connected to WiFi

Securing the router is only one part of the job. A laptop with outdated software, weak sign-in password or malware can still put your information at risk, even on a well-protected network.

Keep Windows, web browsers and security software updated. Use separate passwords for email, banking and important accounts, and enable two-factor authentication where available. Back up important files as well. A backup does not prevent a security incident, but it can save a great deal of stress if a device is damaged, lost or affected by ransomware.

Be careful with smart devices too. Change default passwords on cameras, doorbells and other connected equipment, and remove devices you no longer use from the network.

Router settings can look different between internet providers and equipment brands, and changing the wrong option can leave the home without internet.
